Live production compared
vMix vs Wirecast: two ways to switch live video
If you are on Windows and want the cheaper way in, pick vMix: Basic HD is US$60 once, and there is a 60-day trial of the full Pro edition. If you need it on a Mac as well, or want remote guests, ISO recording or sports tools, pick Wirecast, which runs on both and is US$59 a month. The platform difference settles more than the price does: there is no macOS version of vMix, as it cannot be installed directly on OSX and can only be installed on Windows via Boot Camp on older Intel Macs.
| vMix | Wirecast | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A live video production and streaming switcher for Windows that mixes cameras, network sources and media, then records and streams the result. | Live video production software for Mac and Windows that switches cameras, mixes sources and streams or records the result. |
| Price | US$60, one-time | US$59 a month |
| Runs on | Windows | Windows, Mac |
| Requirements | Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit only, with a 2GHz quad-core processor and 4GB of memory, and a dedicated NVIDIA card with 2GB or more recommended for 4K | Windows 10 version 1809 or later, or macOS 15 Sequoia, with an Apple M1 or newer processor and 8GB of RAM as the minimum |
| Free version | The trial lasts 60 days and runs vMix Pro with all its features, including 4K, MultiCorder and full Instant Replay. A paid licence is needed after the 60 days. | The free download is a fully functional trial of Studio and Pro with no time limit and no credit card needed, but every output and recording carries a visual and audio watermark until a valid licence is purchased and activated, and the user guide adds that a Studio licence used with a Pro feature watermarks just that Pro output. |
| Known for | Mixes cameras, capture cards, NDI, OMT and SRT sources with transitions, overlays and titles, and records and streams the same production at the same time | Wirecast accepts an unlimited number of camera inputs, from USB webcams and SDI or HDMI capture cards to NDI sources and iOS devices through the Wirecast Go app |
| Best for | Operators of live multi-camera productions on a Windows PC who need switching, recording and streaming in one application, from churches and sport to esports, podcasts and conference streams. | Broadcasters, churches, sports producers and corporate teams who need to switch several cameras, host remote guests and record or stream the result from one application on either Windows or Mac. |
Control and connections
| vMix | Wirecast | |
|---|---|---|
| MIDI | Yes: vMix accepts MIDI from controllers for shortcuts, and can send MIDI out to lights and faders through its Activators feature. | Yes: Wirecast reads MIDI control surface input from named controllers rather than sending MIDI out, with the user guide listing APC MINI, APC40mk2, Launchpad MK2 and XKeys 128. |
| Syphon | No: vMix has no Syphon input or output, because there is no macOS version of vMix, and Mac sources reach vMix through NDI or OMT scan converters instead. | No: Wirecast removed Syphon as a source option in version 14.0 because it moved to the Metal rendering framework, and the current user guide lists no Syphon source or output. |
| NDI | Yes: vMix receives NDI sources from the network and sends its output over NDI, with up to four independently configurable NDI outputs in the 4K, Pro and Max editions. | Yes: NDI input works on both Mac and Windows in every version, and Wirecast Pro can additionally send its programme feed out over NDI. |
| Video in and out | Yes: vMix ingests video from cameras, capture cards, video files, NDI, OMT and SRT, and outputs it by recording, streaming and sending it to monitors and other machines. | Yes: Wirecast sends video out through a virtual camera, streaming destinations, NDI programme output, baseband SDI or HDMI cards, secondary display, and records to disk. |
Pick vMix if
you are on Windows, you want to pay once rather than every month, and you need instant replay or remote callers. Basic HD is US$60 once, the full edition is US$50 a month, and the trial runs the Pro edition for 60 days.
Pick Wirecast if
you need it on a Mac as well as Windows, you want ISO recording of each camera feed, or you need sports production tools and PTZ camera control. Studio is US$59 a month and Pro is US$79.
Why people compare them
They are the two paid live production switchers that come up together, because they do the same job: mix cameras and other sources, and send the result out as a stream, a recording and a feed to other machines.
vMix is a live video production and streaming switcher for windows that mixes cameras, network sources and media, then records and streams the result. Wirecast is live video production software for mac and windows that switches cameras, mixes sources and streams or records the result. The interesting part is not the feature list, it is that one of them does not run on the computer half the people reading this own.
Where vMix wins
It costs less to get into. US$60, one-time once for Basic HD, and one-off licences at US$350, one-time, US$700, one-time and US$1,200, one-time above it, each with twelve months of free version updates. The subscription is US$50 a month a month for the full edition.
Its trial is the better one. the trial lasts 60 days and runs vMix Pro with all its features, including 4K, MultiCorder and full Instant Replay. A paid licence is needed after the 60 days.
It has instant replay. Handles remote guests with vMix Call for up to eight callers, and slow-motion instant replay for up to eight cameras
It sends its output to other machines. Sends program output to other machines over NDI, with up to four independently configurable NDI outputs in the 4K, Pro and Max editions
Where Wirecast wins
It runs on a Mac. Wirecast is listed for Windows, Mac. there is no macOS version of vMix, as it cannot be installed directly on OSX and can only be installed on Windows via Boot Camp on older Intel Macs.
Its free download is unlimited. the free download is a fully functional trial of Studio and Pro with no time limit and no credit card needed, but every output and recording carries a visual and audio watermark until a valid licence is purchased and activated, and the user guide adds that a Studio licence used with a Pro feature watermarks just that Pro output.
It records each camera separately. Wirecast records the programme mix to disk while streaming, and Pro adds ISO recording that saves each camera feed as its own file plus multi-track audio recording
Remote guests need no download. Rendezvous brings remote guests into the production as browser-based calls, so Studio supports 2 guests and Pro supports 7, with no software download needed on the guest side
It has sports tools. NDI input works in every version and on both platforms, and Wirecast Pro can also broadcast its programme feed back out over NDI
Where both fall short
Neither is free to run. the cheapest edition, Basic HD at 60 dollars, is limited to four total inputs, three of them cameras or NDI, 1920 by 1080 output and one overlay channel, and it leaves out vMix Call, MultiCorder, Instant Replay, scripting, PTZ control, the Mix input and the extra outputs. the free trial is unlimited in time but watermarks every output and recording, with a periodic Wirecast logo overlay on the video and a periodic voice-over on the audio.
Both are subscriptions once you are past the trial. vMix has one-off licences but they carry twelve months of free version updates and nothing after that, and Wirecast's pricing page lists no one-time or perpetual purchase at all.
Both cap what you can drive. recording is capped at two recorders, and four external outputs, two fullscreen outputs and four virtual outputs come only with the 4K, Pro and Max editions. And even in Wirecast Pro, the video output carries only two audio channels, so a baseband SDI connection cannot deliver the 16 channels the SDI standard supports.
Neither is a music visualiser. Both are general tools for video, and both expect you to bring the content. If what you want is visuals that react to what the Mac is playing, with nothing to prepare, that is a different job than either of these does.
What it costs
vMix has one-off licences from US$60, one-time for Basic HD up to US$1,200, one-time for Pro, and a subscription at US$50 a month a month for the full edition.
Wirecast Studio is US$59 a month a month, or US$34 a month a month when billed yearly, which the price page says saves 300 dollars a year. Wirecast Pro is US$79 a month a month, or US$42 a month a month billed yearly. Both charge in US dollars, so the rate on the day you buy is yours to check.
