TouchDesigner vs After Effects: a live system or a rendered film?
If you are making something that plays while something else is happening, pick TouchDesigner: it draws live, takes MIDI and OSC and sends video to a screen, and its Non-Commercial licence is Free for learning. If you are animating a title sequence or a broadcast graphic that gets delivered as a file, pick After Effects: the After Effects single app is US$22.99 a month. They look like the same job and are not: one is a file you deliver, the other is a machine that never stops.

Control and connections
| TouchDesigner | After Effects | |
|---|---|---|
| MIDI | Yes: TouchDesigner reads MIDI with the MIDI In CHOP and sends MIDI with the MIDI Out CHOP, which can address any available MIDI device. | No: After Effects has no built-in MIDI input, and Adobe lists expressions, scripts, plug-ins and network rendering as its automation methods. |
| OSC | Yes: TouchDesigner supports Open Sound Control through four operators, the OSC In CHOP and OSC Out CHOP for CHOP channels and the OSC In DAT and OSC Out DAT for raw messages, all over UDP. | No: After Effects has no built-in OSC input, and OSC control of parameters is added by third-party plug-ins. |
| Syphon | Yes: Syphon is supported on macOS by the Syphon Spout In TOP and Syphon Spout Out TOP, which share textures with other applications through shared memory, with Syphon restricted to 8-bit RGBA. | No: After Effects has no built-in Syphon output, and its documented outputs are movie, image, audio and project files. |
| Spout | Yes: Spout is supported on Windows by the same two operators, and requires an Nvidia or AMD GPU because Intel does not work, with Spout limited by default to 10 active senders per computer. | No: After Effects has no built-in Spout output, and its documented outputs are movie, image, audio and project files. |
| NDI | Yes: NDI is built in as native operators, the NDI In TOP, NDI Out TOP and NDI DAT, using the NDI SDK bundled with each build, with no documented limit on frame rate or resolution beyond the hardware, while multi-cast configuration is done outside TouchDesigner with the separate NDI Access Manager tool. | No: After Effects has no built-in NDI output, and its documented outputs are movie, image, audio and project files. |
| DMX | Yes: The DMX Out CHOP sends channels to DMX, Art-Net, sACN, KiNET and FTDI devices, and a DMX In CHOP receives DMX, with DMX512 hardware limited to a 44Hz refresh rate. | No: After Effects has no built-in DMX input, and DMX control of parameters is added by third-party plug-ins. |
| Video in and out | Yes: Video input comes from the Video Device In TOP for external cameras, capture cards, capture dongles, IP cameras and decoders, with several devices able to stream at once, while output goes to the screen, to SDI and HDMI cards via the Video Device Out TOP, or to TouchPlayer for standalone playback; the Non-Commercial licence caps image resolution at 1280x1280. | Yes: After Effects outputs video as rendered files through the Render Queue or Adobe Media Encoder, and sending live video to a screen or capture device needs third-party plug-ins. |
Pick TouchDesigner if
you are building something that reacts, on stage or in a room, and you want to drive it from MIDI or OSC while it runs. The Non-Commercial licence is Free and Commercial is US$600 for paid work.
Pick After Effects if
you are animating text, graphics and illustrations for film, TV or the web, and you want a timeline of layers and keyframes you can render out. The single app is US$22.99 a month, with a seven-day trial.
Why people compare them
Both are ways of making graphics that move, and both come up when someone is putting visuals together for a piece of work. The difference shows up the moment the work has to happen live.
After Effects is motion design and visual effects software for animating text, graphics and illustrations for film, tv, video and the web. TouchDesigner is derivative's node-based visual programming environment for real-time interactive media. One ends in a rendered file. The other is running the whole time you are looking at it.
Where TouchDesigner wins
It draws live, and it connects. A free Non-Commercial licence for personal use and learning
The connections are in the box. TouchDesigner reads MIDI with the MIDI In CHOP and sends it with the MIDI Out CHOP, handles OSC through four operators over UDP, has Syphon on a Mac and Spout on Windows, has NDI, and has a DMX Out CHOP that sends to DMX, Art-Net, sACN, KiNET and FTDI devices. After Effects has none of them: after Effects has no built-in MIDI input, and Adobe lists expressions, scripts, plug-ins and network rendering as its automation methods.
There is no render step. Only 64-bit plug-ins work, so any 32-bit plug-in for After Effects needs a new 64-bit version.
It is free to learn on. non-Commercial is free but capped at 1280x1280 output and not for paid work.
Where After Effects wins
It is a compositor, and it is a good one. Motion graphics and compositing in one timeline, covering 2D animation, 3D animation and visual effects.
The 3D is in the same window. A true 3D workspace in which 3D objects are animated right alongside 2D graphics.
The plug-in world is enormous. A large plug-in ecosystem, with plug-ins from over 400 partners.
It has help. Built-in AI tools such as AI Object Matte for isolating a moving subject and Content-Aware Fill for removing unwanted elements.
It is not only live. Close integration with the rest of Creative Cloud, including layered PSD import and Dynamic Link to Premiere Pro.
Where both fall short
Neither is free for paid work. There is no free version of After Effects: the trial is seven days, it needs a free Creative Cloud membership, and it becomes a paid membership unless it is cancelled. TouchDesigner's Non-Commercial licence is Free and rules out paid work as well as capping output at 1280x1280.
Neither is a music visualiser. Both are general tools for graphics, and both expect you to bring the content and decide how it reacts. If what you want is visuals that react to what the Mac is playing, with nothing to prepare, that is a different job than either of these does.
Both ask for a recent machine. macOS Sonoma (version 14) or later with 16GB of RAM and 8GB of free disk space, or Windows 11 v24H2 or later with 16GB of RAM
What it costs
After Effects on its own is US$22.99 a month a month, or US$69.99 a month a month for the whole of Creative Cloud. Students and teachers pay US$19.99 a month a month and teams pay US$99.99 a month. Adobe prices vary by region and currency, and Creative Cloud Pro for individuals is currently promoted for the first three months.
TouchDesigner's Non-Commercial licence is Free for personal use and learning, capped at 1280x1280 output. Commercial is US$600, one-time for paid projects, Educational is US$300, one-time and Pro is US$2,200, one-time, which adds six hours of Pro Support. Derivative lists those as from prices.
Questions people ask
Is After Effects free?
Not as a version you can keep. There is no free version of After Effects: the trial is seven days, it needs a free Creative Cloud membership, and it becomes a paid membership unless it is cancelled.
Which one is for a live show?
TouchDesigner. It draws live and takes MIDI and OSC while it runs, and it sends video to a screen. After Effects makes rendered files, and sending live video out of it needs third-party plug-ins.
Can After Effects control lights or hardware?
Not on its own. Adobe documents no MIDI, OSC or DMX input, and its automation is expressions, scripts and plug-ins, so control of hardware comes from other people's plug-ins.
Do they run on the same computers?
Both run on macOS and Windows. After Effects needs macOS Sonoma (version 14) or later with 16GB of RAM and 8GB of free disk space, or Windows 11 v24H2 or later with 16GB of RAM TouchDesigner needs macOS 13 or later on a 2020-or-later Mac (Apple silicon highly recommended).
