TouchDesigner vs vvvv: two node-based environments, one per platform
If you have a Mac, the answer is TouchDesigner: vvvv has no native macOS version at all, so a Mac user has to run the Windows build in a virtual machine. If you are on Windows and want to write your patches in C# and export them as standalone applications, vvvv is the stronger of the two. Both are node-based environments for real-time graphics, both handle MIDI, OSC, DMX and NDI, and both are free for learning.

Control and connections
| TouchDesigner | vvvv | |
|---|---|---|
| MIDI | Yes: TouchDesigner reads MIDI with the MIDI In CHOP and sends MIDI with the MIDI Out CHOP, which can address any available MIDI device. | Yes: MIDI nodes ship with vvvv in the VL.IO.Midi package, and MIDI is listed among the protocols vvvv talks to. |
| OSC | Yes: TouchDesigner supports Open Sound Control through four operators, the OSC In CHOP and OSC Out CHOP for CHOP channels and the OSC In DAT and OSC Out DAT for raw messages, all over UDP. | Yes: OSC support is available through the VL.IO.OSC pack, and OSC is listed among the protocols vvvv talks to. |
| Syphon | Yes: Syphon is supported on macOS by the Syphon Spout In TOP and Syphon Spout Out TOP, which share textures with other applications through shared memory, with Syphon restricted to 8-bit RGBA. | No: vvvv has no native macOS build and no Syphon pack; its documentation covers Spout, the Windows route for sharing textures. |
| Spout | Yes: Spout is supported on Windows by the same two operators, and requires an Nvidia or AMD GPU because Intel does not work, with Spout limited by default to 10 active senders per computer. | Yes: Spout is supported and ships with vvvv through the VL.Stride pack, for sharing realtime video with other Windows applications. |
| NDI | Yes: NDI is built in as native operators, the NDI In TOP, NDI Out TOP and NDI DAT, using the NDI SDK bundled with each build, with no documented limit on frame rate or resolution beyond the hardware, while multi-cast configuration is done outside TouchDesigner with the separate NDI Access Manager tool. | Yes: NDI is supported through the VL.IO.NDI pack, for streaming video and textures over the network. |
| DMX | Yes: The DMX Out CHOP sends channels to DMX, Art-Net, sACN, KiNET and FTDI devices, and a DMX In CHOP receives DMX, with DMX512 hardware limited to a 44Hz refresh rate. | Yes: DMX output is supported through an Enttec DMXUsbPro sender node, and Art-Net nodes ship with vvvv. |
| Video in and out | Yes: Video input comes from the Video Device In TOP for external cameras, capture cards, capture dongles, IP cameras and decoders, with several devices able to stream at once, while output goes to the screen, to SDI and HDMI cards via the Video Device Out TOP, or to TouchPlayer for standalone playback; the Non-Commercial licence caps image resolution at 1280x1280. | Yes: Video playback and capture are supported, including image sequence playback, shader based image effects and camera capture. |
Pick TouchDesigner if
you have a Mac, you want MIDI, OSC, DMX, Syphon, Spout and NDI built in without installing packs, and you want a free licence for learning that will not lock you out of a Mac. The Non-Commercial licence is Free and Commercial is US$600.
Pick vvvv if
you are on Windows, you want to write C# inside your patches and export them as standalone applications you can deploy without vvvv on the machine, or you need several PCs driven from one primary.
Why people compare them
They are close relatives. Both are node-based environments where you patch together graphics and let them run live, both come from the same tradition of VJ and installation work, and both have been asked the same question: which one should I learn?
The answer has got simpler than it was, because of the one thing that separates them now. vvvv is Windows only: there is no native macOS version of vvvv, so Mac users have to run the Windows ARM build in a virtual machine. TouchDesigner runs on Windows, Mac.
Where TouchDesigner wins
It runs on a Mac. TouchDesigner runs on Windows, Mac, while vvvv has no native macOS version at all, so on a Mac it is the one that runs on your own hardware rather than in a virtual machine.
The connections are in the box. TouchDesigner reads MIDI and sends it, sends and receives OSC, has Syphon on a Mac and Spout on Windows, has NDI, and has a DMX Out CHOP that sends to DMX, Art-Net, sACN, KiNET and FTDI devices. vvvv covers the same ground, but through packs you install: its MIDI nodes ship in the VL.IO.Midi package, OSC in VL.IO.OSC, Spout in VL.Stride and NDI in VL.IO.NDI.
It has a player for the output. TouchPlayer runs a TouchDesigner file on another machine, and the Non-Commercial licence excludes a subset of Pro and Commercial operators, including the Shared Memory OPs and DirectX OPs, and its keys are single use with 10 keys per account.
Where vvvv wins
You can write real code in it. Patches run live: any change to a patch, or to C# code inside it, is applied without restarting the program vvvv is built on .NET, so a patch that gets complicated can become C# rather than a bigger graph.
It exports an application. A patch can be exported as a standalone application and deployed without vvvv on the target machine
It drives a room. Several PCs can be orchestrated from one primary machine to drive large-scale installations
The free edition is genuinely free. There is no copy protection, no feature limitations and no mandatory registration, and the free edition excludes commercial use, and academic research, use by non-profits and NFT artists are counted as commercial use.
Where both fall short
Both need a system built before anything happens. Neither plays by itself. You patch, or you build, and the result is only as good as the work you put in.
Both cap the free edition in a way that matters. TouchDesigner's Non-Commercial licence rules out paid work and caps output at 1280x1280. vvvv's free edition has no feature limits at all, but The free edition excludes commercial use, and academic research, use by non-profits and NFT artists are counted as commercial use.
Neither is a music visualiser. Both are general tools, and both expect you to bring the content and decide how it reacts. If what you want is visuals that react to what the Mac is playing, with nothing to prepare, that is a different job than either of these does.
What it costs
TouchDesigner's Non-Commercial licence is Free for personal use and learning, capped at 1280x1280 output. Commercial is US$600, one-time for paid projects, Educational is US$300, one-time, and Pro is US$2,200, one-time, which adds six hours of Pro Support. Derivative lists those as from prices.
vvvv is free for non-commercial use, and a developer licence is €540, one-time for an individual, €1,080, one-time for a freelancer, small or medium business or non-profit, and €2,160, one-time for NFT artists and larger enterprises. A device licence for running vvvv on somebody else's computer is €222, one-time, and there is an educational licence at €270, one-time. Licences stay valid once bought; only the updates expire.
Questions people ask
Does vvvv run on a Mac?
Not natively. There is no native macOS version of vvvv, so Mac users have to run the Windows ARM build in a virtual machine. TouchDesigner runs on Windows, Mac, so on a Mac it is the one that runs on your own hardware.
Which is easier to learn?
That depends on what you already know. TouchDesigner is a visual environment where you wire nodes together, and its free licence is generous enough to learn on. vvvv is the same shape but sits on .NET, so if you write C# it is the more familiar of the two, and its free edition has no feature limits at all.
Do they both handle MIDI, OSC and DMX?
Yes, both do. TouchDesigner has them built in, in the MIDI CHOPs, the OSC CHOPs and the DMX Out CHOP. vvvv covers the same protocols through installable packs, and adds Art-Net, Spout, NDI and TUIO.
Can I use vvvv for commercial work?
No, not on the free edition. The free edition excludes commercial use, and academic research, use by non-profits and NFT artists are counted as commercial use. A developer licence is €540 for an individual.
