Live production compared
ProPresenter vs OBS Studio: which one is right for your event?
If you are running a church service or a live event and need lyrics, slides and media on several screens, pick ProPresenter. If you need the video recorded, sent to a streaming service or read by another machine, pick OBS Studio, which is free and open source and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. They get compared because both mix sources and put a finished feed on a screen, and the choice underneath that is between a tool that holds the show and a tool that carries the feed.

Control and connections
| ProPresenter | OBS Studio | |
|---|---|---|
| MIDI | Yes: ProPresenter sends and receives MIDI, and can use incoming notes to trigger slides, media and macros. | No: OBS Studio has no built-in MIDI source, filter or action, and MIDI control comes from community plug-ins such as obs-midi-mg. |
| OSC | No: No OSC support was found; the maker documents HTTP and TCP/IP control, MIDI, DMX and timecode, and its own help centre search returns no OSC article. | No: OBS Studio does not speak OSC natively, and OSC is handled by community scripts and companion applications built on its WebSocket API. |

Pick ProPresenter if
you are running a church service or a live event where a show of lyrics, slides and media is prepared in advance and has to reach several screens, and one operator has to run it. ProPresenter sends and receives MIDI, can be driven from a lighting console over DMX on a Mac, and outputs NDI and Syphon.
Pick OBS Studio if
you need the video recorded, sent to a streaming service or read by another machine, and you would rather not buy a licence for the software. OBS Studio costs nothing, its source is published, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Why people compare them
They come up together because both mix sources and put a finished feed on a screen, and because one of them costs nothing. ProPresenter is presentation and live production software for showing lyrics, slides and media, and for driving screens and video outputs. OBS Studio is free and open source software for live video recording and streaming, built around scenes that mix camera, screen, media and audio sources.
ProPresenter is built for a room with people in it: a church service or a live event, where the operator has a show of lyrics, slides and media prepared in advance and drives several screens from it. OBS Studio is built for a feed that leaves the machine, as a recording, a live stream to a service, a projector output, or a virtual camera that other applications can read.
So the comparison is usually a question about which half of the job you are being asked to do. When it is both halves, you are looking at two applications, and the money is one decision among several.
Where ProPresenter wins
The worship content is in the software. Worship tooling is built in, with automatic lyric and copyright integration and access to 125 Bible translations. You do not need a separate lyric tool or a Bible app to run a service.
It drives many screens from one machine. Multi-screen management sends different layouts to each screen and supports up to 8 unique outputs, with separate stage display layouts for confidence monitors.
It has broadcast outputs. Broadcast outputs cover SDI with separate key and fill channels, NDI, Syphon and Resi streaming. ProPresenter outputs video to broadcast hardware, including separate key and fill channels for broadcast graphics applications.
The desk can drive it. Automation covers macros, MIDI, DMX, timecode and Elgato Stream Deck, so one operator can run a show. ProPresenter sends and receives MIDI, and can use incoming notes to trigger slides, media and macros. ProPresenter can be controlled by a lighting console over DMX or Art-Net, but this is macOS only. ProPresenter can create a virtual NDI output that shows over the network to any software or hardware that receives NDI.
Support is there when a service is about to start. Support runs seven days a week with a stated average chat wait of under 90 seconds.
Where OBS Studio wins
It costs nothing and you can read the source. It is free and open source under the GNU General Public License version 2, with the source published and community plug-ins listed on the project's forum.
It runs on three systems. It runs the same application on Windows, macOS and Linux, so the same setup can go out from a Windows laptop at the venue and a Linux machine at home. ProPresenter runs on Mac and Windows.
Mixing and switching are the core of it. It captures and mixes several video and audio sources into switchable scenes, with per-source filters, an audio mixer and hotkeys.
It is arranged for running a show. It includes Studio Mode, a multiview that monitors eight scenes at once, and customisable transitions for running a live show.
Other programs can drive it. It has shipped a WebSocket API inside the application since version 28, alongside Lua and Python scripting and a plug-in system.
The output goes where a feed goes. OBS Studio produces video output as recordings, live streams, projector outputs and a virtual camera that other applications can read.
Where both fall short
Neither one is a music visualiser. ProPresenter shows the lyrics, slides and media you have prepared, and OBS Studio mixes the video and audio sources you have added, so in both cases the content comes from you.
ProPresenter's free mode is watermarked. The free mode is a watermarked Local Editor seat: it edits on one computer only, does not sync to the cloud, and puts a ProPresenter watermark on outputs.
OBS Studio reaches the rest through other people's code. OBS Studio has no built-in MIDI source, filter or action, and MIDI control comes from community plug-ins such as obs-midi-mg. OBS Studio does not speak OSC natively, and OSC is handled by community scripts and companion applications built on its WebSocket API. OBS Studio ships no NDI support of its own, and NDI input, main output and a per-source filter come from the DistroAV plug-in. OBS Studio has no built-in Spout support, and Spout video is shared with it through the third-party OBS Spout plug-in, which is Windows only. OBS Studio has no DMX support of its own, and DMX over Art-Net control is offered by community tools such as ArtNetOBS.
Some of the connections only work on one system. DMX and Art-Net control is macOS only, and on Windows ProPresenter supports MIDI devices only. OBS Studio reads Syphon servers on a Mac and has no Syphon output, and the Spout plug-in it uses is Windows only.
ProPresenter's own recording and streaming have a hardware condition. H.264 recording and RTMP streaming need a graphics card with NVENC, AMF or QSV support, and are not offered on machines that lack it.
OBS Studio asks more of the machine as the show gets heavier. CPU requirements vary considerably depending on the chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. On a Mac, OBS Studio needs Screen Recording permission before it can capture the desktop, windows or applications, alongside Camera, Microphone and Accessibility permissions.
What it costs
ProPresenter is sold to new users as a subscription. Standard, one seat, billed annually is US$289 a year and Standard, one seat, billed monthly is US$29 a month. Annual per-seat prices fall as the seat count rises: US$189 a year per seat for 2 to 4 seats and US$149 a year per seat for 5 to 10 seats, while 11 or more seats are quoted by sales with no published price, and monthly subscriptions get no volume discount. Installing, registering and verifying the subscription need a working internet connection, though running the software does not.
There is a free mode as well, though it is not a published pricing tier: it is an unregistered download or a free Local Editor seat that puts a watermark on every output. It is enough to build and edit a show on one computer.
The trial is a separate thing: it runs 14 days from the moment the request is completed, it needs a credit card at sign-up, it converts automatically to a monthly or annual subscription, and only one trial is allowed per organisation. Unlike the free mode, the trial is a fully registered copy, so there is no watermark and it can be used in front of a live audience.
The money side is simpler on the other side: OBS Studio is free and open source software, so the price is zero rather than a paid tier. Its licence is the GNU General Public License version 2, which is a licence rather than a price. That is not the whole comparison, because the features ProPresenter has built in are the ones OBS Studio gets from plug-ins written by other people.
Questions people ask
Is ProPresenter cheaper than OBS Studio?
No. OBS Studio is free and open source, so there is nothing to buy. ProPresenter Standard, one seat is US$29 a month or US$289 a year, and its free mode is a watermarked Local Editor seat that edits on one computer only.
Can OBS Studio do MIDI, NDI or DMX like ProPresenter?
Not on its own. OBS Studio has no built-in MIDI, OSC, NDI, Spout or DMX, and each of those comes from a community plug-in such as obs-midi-mg, DistroAV, the OBS Spout plug-in and ArtNetOBS. ProPresenter sends and receives MIDI, outputs NDI and Syphon, and can be driven from a lighting console over DMX or Art-Net on macOS only.
Which one should a church use for a service that also has to be streamed?
ProPresenter for the service and OBS Studio for the stream. ProPresenter holds the lyrics, slides and media, sends different layouts to each screen, and can output key and fill to a switcher. OBS Studio does the recording and the sending at no cost, on Windows, macOS and Linux. A team that needs both halves is running two applications.
Do they run on the same computers?
ProPresenter runs on Mac and Windows and needs macOS 13.5 Ventura or later, or Windows 10 version 1903 or later, with macOS 15 or Windows 11 recommended. OBS Studio runs on Mac, Windows, Linux and needs macOS 13.0 or newer, or Windows 10 or 11, with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU.
